Motorbikes, quad bikes, cars and
any other type motor vehicles are strictly prohibited from using the Greenway. (exception:
motorised wheelchairs)
It is illegal and the police have confiscated
bikes and made referrals to the magistrates. The Greenway project has the full and
effective co-operation of Heckmondwike traffic police.
This rule applies to all of the
Sustrans paths and is there to protect the safety of the many children, walkers and
cyclists. We would not expect to meet motor vehicles on our street pavements and the same
standards of safety are applied to the Greenway. It takes just one motorcyclist to be
riding at speed for the safety of a pedestrian to be compromised.
There are various measures
currently being put into place to police the Greenway.
We rarely encounter a motorbike on the Greenway
nowadays. Please help to keep the Greenway a safe place the community.
If you know that a motorbike is on
the Greenway then please phone the police on: 0845 6060606 as soon as you can. Give any
details about the rider(s) or the motorbike if you can, and an approximate location on the
Greenway.
HOWEVER
Locally, we do recognise the
legitimate needs of motorcyclists to have their own space to use for their hobby. This
issue is being addressed:
Are there any landowners in the
Spen Valley who have land left fallow and would allow motorcyclist to use the land for a
temporary period? Please e-mail us at rangers@spenvalleygreenway.com with your details.
Get in touch with Leisure &
Recreation at Kirklees Council (Tel. 01484 234000) and inquire about facilities for the
motorcyclist, or lack of it, in the Kirklees district.
If you are a motorcyclists and have
a means of transporting your bike to a legitimate motorcycle circuit, then pal up with
another motorcyclists and share transport. (e-mail your details to rangers@spenvalleygreenway.comand we can put you in touch
with each other)
The Spen Valley Forum is looking at
