A group of people were brought together in the Summer of 1998 by Mike Wood M.P. when the receivers of Transperience were trying to sell the land containing the railway line from Low Moor to Ravensthorpe which closed in 1974. It was feared, with good reason, that land might be sold piecemeal and the integrity of the line lost. The primary aim at the time was to preserve the line under one owner. The aim was achieved when in 1999 Sustrans purchased the line. The Spen Valley Forum came into being, open to all interested people; dedicated to promoting the line; supporting Sustrans; and keeping alive the prospect of an alternative transport system through the Spen valley
